Fun with MA COVID-19 reporting 09-Sep-2020 Greater-Greater Somerville local edition

(All average cases listed are 14-day averages and are per 100,000, which means that it's comparable between cities without regard for each city's population)
  • Arlington - Sorry to say you are continuing your trend of increasing average daily cases for the 3rd week in a row: 0.2 to 0.6 to 1.6 to 2.3.
  • Boston - You're not increasing nearly as much as you were before, you went from 7.4 last week to 7.5 this week.... a review of each neighborhood will likely come out over the weekend, much as it did this past weekend. 
  • Cambridge - Your 2 week trend was broken. 2.5 to 1.8 to 1.6 to 2.0. That's still good but... you know... what with the whole not living in a bubble and the rest of the area trending in the wrong direction... well... you get the picture.
  • Chelsea (reported by request)- You're continuing to bring your deep deep red to a slightly less deep red: (23.9 to) 31.9 to 29.4 to 25. Keep up the good work and you'll be back down to below where you were a month ago... and hopefully some time in the future you'll be in the yellow with many of the rest on the list.
  • Fitchburg - You're hovering around the border of green/yellow but have no trend: 3.6->4.6->2.4->2.4->3.1. Please try to bring yourselves solidly in the green like Cambridge has been.
  • Holliston - You took a turn for the worse with last week's average but you're getting back on track this week. 1 new case in the last week and an average in the green of 3.1 for the last 2 weeks. Here's hoping next week you have a 2-week average of 0.5.
  • Lynn - 24.3->23.5->16.7->12.1->9.5... DAMN that's a great trend. Keep that up and you'll be in the yellow next week and green the week after! Please PLEASE show the rest of us how it's done and get below 2 in the next 3 weeks. It would be such a great success story.
  • Medford - 4.5->3.6->3.1->4.5->5.4. You're solidly in the yellow now. Time to wear your masks and stay away from indoor locations other than your own home if at all possible. Hopefully you did all that this past weekend too.
  • Somerville - Just in time for the announcement that we're re-opening to almost the same level as the rest of the state, we're inches away from red this week. 3.7 became 4.7 became 5.8 and now 7.7. I will be surprised if we're not in the red (>8) next week.

Switching to Wastewater Monitoring Only

Case counts were already somewhat misleading so, if people were actually paying attention to the wastewater and had a target and/or threshold for concern, that would actually be potentially a more reasonable thing to monitor... with that in mind, let's look at some time points to try to find some measures to consider.  Let's start with establishing a few thresholds.   Early on in the pandemic, we said 8 cases per 100,000 people per day was the highest threshold of concern (ie, that was the introduction to the highest risk-rating we had).  Later, we relaxed this a bit because we realized that this would keep us on high alert and never allow us to go back to normal ... sort of like saying that everybody is smoking so the threshold that for risking cancer shouldn't be smoking 3 cigarettes a day but instead should be a pack a day.  Based on this relaxing of concern, let's go ahead and add in 16 cases per 100,000 people per day as a threshold to monitor for, just as we did w

MA Wastewater Tracking (23-Jan-2024 data)

See that little uptick at the end of each graph? This didn't happen in 2022 but did in 2023. We understood the goal in 2022 (to some degree) but since ... is there some portion of the population who says "covid spread must be down so let's go nuts"? I suspect this is partially colleges reconvening their students on campuses where in 2022 they were still trying to get their students to maintain some precautions and they haven't been since... but I also don't think this is just college campuses.

Fun with MA COVID-19 Reporting 18-Jun-2020 edition

For those of you who like to see fun with numbers and accounting of Covid cases in Massachusetts (and also to get depressed in the morning)... Yesterday's report included an increase in the overall number of probable and confirmed cases of 266 an increase in the overall number of confirmed cases of 180 a change in the number of confirmed and probable cases that were originally traced to the last 44 days of 171 That means that at least 9 newly found confirmed cases and at least 78 OTHER newly found probable cases FROM BEFORE 44 DAYS AGO were uncovered sometime between 4pm on Tuesday and 4pm on Wednesday. Once we get past 4 days, we only see single-digit increases/decreases in uncovered cases so those numbers seem to be relatively static. We are likely to get to the 7,750 dead mark today and the 8,000 dead mark by early July.
