Outside MA: Brazil, India, Japan, and UK

Periodically, I look at states and countries where I have friends and/or family to see how those states are doing with COVID-19 cases. I always take a look at the population size of the state as well so that the comparison I'm making to MA numbers is somewhat valid.

Today, I'm reviewing some countries I last reviewed at the end of Sep/start of Oct: Brazil, India, Japan, and UK.

Numbers for comparison:
  • MA
    • True spread started early March
    • First wave peak: Apr 14-Apr 20 - 33 cases per 100,000 per day
    • Bottom between waves: Jun 28-Jul 4 - 2.2 cases per 100,000 per day
    • Current (period includes days that are still increasing): 36.2 cases per 100,000 per day
  • USA
    • I suppose you could say we saw a bottom between second and third "waves" on Sep 5-Sep 11 with 10.7 cases per 100,000 per day
    • Oct 25-Oct 31 saw 24.6 cases per 100,000 per day
    • The last 7 days saw 52.8 cases per 100,000 per day
    • Note, peaks and valleys within the USA are an interesting topic because there have been a wide range of timelines for different states peaking vs reducing their case counts.  I bolded Oct 25-Oct 31 as an indication of how dramatically we can climb when we're all in lock step about increasing our case counts.

Brazil
Brazil had a lot of trouble getting things under control but the climb in cases wasn't as quick as many countries/states I've looked at in Europe and the USA.  They started back in March and only just at the end of July saw the peak of their first wave... at only 22.1 cases per 100,000 people per day.  They then slowly reduced their cases all the way down to 8 (average from Oct 31-Nov 6), which is lower than many United States states I'm tracking.  They've since seen an increase and are now at 14.4 for the last 7 days.  I would love for them to return to reducing their cases but I feel like, considering where they are and where we (and many that are held as examples are), I (and others) have absolutely no leg to stand on.

India
India also struggled for a while, finally peaking around mid-Sep with 62.8 cases per 100,000 per day.  They have since steadily decreased their cases till the end of October and currently sit at 31.1.

Japan
If you were just looking at Japan's waves in terms of the curve, it seems bad.  They're now seeing their third wave and each has had a higher peak than the prior.  But that's super deceiving given that their latest peak, which has been substantially higher than their first, is a whopping 1.6 cases per 100,000 people per day.  Seriously, think about that for a moment.  Their PEAK is lower than just about any location I'm looking at has at their bottom in between waves!  There is an array of reasons for this, not the least of which would be a cultural norm of wearing masks when one is sick rather than just taking meds that partially mask your illness.

United Kingdom
The UK appears to be decreasing their cases from their second wave.  Having reached a peak in mid Nov of 38 cases per 100,000 people per day.  They've slightly reduced and are now at 29.4.  Mind you, their first wave reached a peak of 7.8 cases per 100,000 per day.

Stay safe. Stay sane. Stay informed.
