Fun with MA COVID-19 Reporting 10-Dec-2020 Edition

Well, it didn't take too long for the state's new color coding that was meant to give us all the sense that we're doing ok to look super bleak again.  This week's report, even by the state's bizarre color coding, is covered in red.  By the state's methodology, 159 out of 352 cities and towns are now in the red.  In other words, his rolling back to phase 3 step 1 means even less than I suggested it did earlier this week because nearly half the state would have rolled back to that by now anyway (previously I said it didn't do enough because it was still a level at which we were increasing cases dramatically).

Just a quick note, the state used to use 8 as the high-water mark that changed a city/town to red.  Using the state's purposefully lower-than-actual calculation to determine the rate, 320 cities/towns are above this line.  Hell, 129 were above 40 cases/day/100k people by the state's calculation.

In terms of hospital use, there is no region that has more than 20% non-ICU capacity, the NorthEast region continues to have 0% ICU capacity and Boston is now down to 20% ICU capacity remaining.  This is terrifying as it means that there is less capacity to handle non-COVID-19 related health concerns.

For deaths... ok, so, remember how from June 7 through November 27 we saw no days that reached 40 deaths?  We continue only see 2 days since Nov 27 with fewer than 40 deaths... and now we have a day that reached 58 deaths, something not seen since May.

Cases...well... last week just keeps climbing.  The average yesterday was 4367.9 and today is now 4509.8.  Up till last week, the highest single day was 3,789 from Tuesday the previous week.  Last week has now seen a day with 6,025 and no weekday below 4,998.... and this week is shaping up to be a repeat with Monday ALREADY having 4,370 and Tuesday having 3,052.  I'll take a moment remind you that each of these days will likely increase by hundreds tomorrow if not more than 1,000.

So... yeah, perhaps we should be actually trying to drive down cases rather just pretending we're doing something?

Stay safe. Stay sane. Stay informed.
