Fun with MA COVID-19 Reporting 11-Jan-2021
Just a quick note for those of you that thought we had reached a new plateau (I was one of you until the last couple days)... we haven't. We're seeing big increases in cases again. Already, last week has reached 5,336 average daily cases with the single highest day ever being Monday and Tuesday being the third highest single day. The fact that last week is now seen to have been close to a 10% increase over the previous week and a 15% increase over the third highest week is particularly problematic given we haven't seen what the final tally will look like, with days before the average stops increasing dramatically. I said I expected to know that last week was a record breaker by Wednesday because of how the numbers come in over time and it's concerning to see just how badly we already know last week was.
The good news in today's report? So far we haven't seen that last week's death count is increasing above the previous week's (holding steady at an average in the high 60's/day isn't great but it's better than seeing another 13% increase). With that said, we saw a dramatic uptick in deaths on the previous Sunday so anything could happen. Also, hospitalizations overall are down and ICU and intubations aren't rising as quickly as they were previously in terms of percentage increase. Over the last 7 days we've actually seen a decrease of 5% for hospitalizations and only a 1% increase of ICU and intubations.
Stay safe. Stay sane. Stay informed.
