Fun with MA COVID-19 Reporting 08-Feb-2021 Edition
We continue to see a slow decline in cases, reduction in hospital use, and a very slight decline in deaths. We're still above the peak from our first wave back in April 2020 though and we're pushing forward with reopening further. Here's hoping that any increase we see from this past weekend's activities are only a small and short-lived increase and we get below the first wave's peak cases per day soon.
Cases per day averaged at 4,625.3 for the month of December, having peaked with a weekly average of 4,647.6 for the week of Nov 29 and then peaking again for the week of Jan 3 with 6,087.3. For comparison, the first wave peaked at 2,193.6 the week of April 15 and we reached a low during the summer of 177.7 for the week of Jun 24. The average from the week of Jan 24 is sitting at 2,989.6 and last week appears to be shaping up to be somewhere in the 2,300-2,500 range (it's already at 2,229.1 but the average for the week of Jan 24 has only increased about 240/day since this time last week).
Deaths have been much slower to come down. We've only had 2 waves for deaths, with their build up over the fall and into the winter being a slower climb. They reached the first peak in the week of April 15 2020 with 177.1 and then dropped off, reducing by 6% the week of April 22, nearly 10% the following week, and by more than 20% each subsequent week for more than a month, reaching 12.9 the week of July 29 and staying below 20 from July 8 through October 14. They reached their second peak the weeks of Dec 27 and Jan 3 with 71.7 each week. Since then, we haven't seen the dramatic curtailing that we did with the first peak, reducing to 70.1 the week of Jan 10, 67.7 the week of Jan 17, and 64 the week of Jan 24. Last week appears to be trending lower, potentially with a reduction of nearly 10%, which is great news if it pans out.
Stay safe. Stay sane. Stay informed.
