Massachusetts COVID-91 Cluster Review (11-Mar-2021 Data)

Time to take another look at where cases are coming from.  As always, I'm removing the cases without residential-like settings because it's really just about impossible to prevent within-household spread, we can only really hope to prevent spread in places we go outside our household.

Since 31-Jan-2021, we've seen the following tiers of clusters:

  • Dear Heaven That's a Spread tier
    • Child Care tops everything with 308 clusters and 382 cases... but don't worry, kids don't spread COVID, right?  I'm sure this is fine.
    • Colleges & Universities, which should absolutely be in person during a pandemic because otherwise colleges lose out on rent income comes next in both cluster count and case count with 87 clusters and 339 cases
  • 80-150 Cases / >50 Clusters tier
    • Industrial Settings had 53 clusters causing 133 cases
    • Organized Athletics/Camps raised 79 clusters causing 116 cases
    • Retail & Services rounds this tier off with 56 clusters and 83 cases
  • Middle Ground tier
    • Social Gatherings are still a pretty big spreader with 28 clusters and 62 cases
    • K-12 Schools, shockingly since kids don't spread COVID and in-person schools are safe, comes next with 50 clusters causing 54 cases.
    • Restaurants & Food Courts are next up with 43 clusters and 47 cases
    • Other Food Establishments with 20 clusters produced 36 cases
  • Lower tier
    • Other Workplaces had 19 clusters with 29 cases
    • Recreational/Cultural had 11 clusters with 29 cases
    • Places of Worship had 9 clusters with 28 cases
    • Offices: 18 clusters and 27 cases
    • Hospitals: 31 clusters and 25 cases (they've really cracked down on the spread... back when I started looking at the cluster reports, hospitals topped things off because of course they would... I'm really quite pleasantly surprised to see this change in recent months)
    • Other Healthcare: 18 clusters and 22 cases
A couple things to consider:
  • Restaurants (and Other Food Establishments) were partially shut down with limitations on how many in-person diners could be there for part of the period.
  • Many K-12 Schools were remote so you can expect the spread to increase for this sector as we see people return to in-person learning in the next month (given the extreme push the state is making).
