Fun with MA COVID-19 Reporting 28-Apr-2021
So, as mentioned yesterday, it does appear that last week was third week straight of reduced cases per day... to put things in a bit more perspective, though, a year ago we went from 2,118 cases per day (note, this was not our peak) to 1072 cases per day in 3 weeks and the recent decrease is from 1,964 cases per day to 1,204.... and the number for last week is still increasing a bit.
I also saw someone post today that they were excited because we were down to low single digits of people dying per day... alright, time to quickly point something out: DeathsReported (Report Date) is not how many people died on a day but instead is the difference between the reported total deaths the preceding day and the new reported total deaths... for a better understanding of where we are, you have to look at the DateofDeath data which is when the deaths occurred. The DateofDeath data shows us that, while we did decrease week-over-week (at least by currently known deaths), it was by an insignificant amount (we went from 9.43 deaths to 9.29 deaths per day). The "low single digits" the commenter was pleased by is only seen in the DeathsReported tallies where you can find that 4 days in all of April (and indeed going all the way back to October 2020) were 5 or fewer... and almost all the rest of then days are double digits. To cherry pick the differences in how many deaths were known one day and the next is ... not at all telling of what situation we're truly in. Yes, deaths are down, but we're not in the low single digits yet, nor have we ever been going back to the start of the pandemic in mid March 2020.
With that said, we are seeing fewer deaths than any week going back to the second week of deaths starting March 15, 2020, but I would like to remind you that deaths are not the only negative impact COVID-19 is having on people.
Stay safe. Stay sane. Stay informed. Stay honest about where we are and how we're doing.
