Fun with MA COVID-19 Reporting 16-Jun-2021 Edition

The difference between what we knew this time about the week before last week and what we know about that week now is minor.  May 30 2021-Jun 5 2021 ticked up from 132.4 to 133.4 average cases per day (both being 1.9 cases per day per 100,000 population).  It is with this in mind that we can celebrate the last 2 weeks having the fewest cases since before cases really started piling up way back in early March 2020.  The week of 8-Mar-2020 saw an average cases per day of just 31.8 but it was also only the first week with no days without new cases and the second week where any single day saw more than 2 cases.  The week of 15-Mar-2020 already averaged 245 cases per day.  At our lowest point last summer, we saw a week with 156.7 cases per day (28-Jun-2020).  So, with the week of May 30-2021 having 133.4 and last week likely remaining just below an average of 100 cases per day (still above an average of 1 case per day per 100,000 people), we're doing pretty well.

With that said, the week of Jun 6 2021 still had over 4 deaths per day on average so I wouldn't say we're in post-COVID times yet.  Yes, we can relax a little.  Yes, summers do appear to have less risk given the slower spread.  But more spread, the longer the spread, the more potential for a new dangerous variant.  Let's get COVID in our past by getting as many people around the globe vaccinated and continuing reasonable precautions (especially in communities that include those ineligible for the vaccines).

Stay safe. Stay sane. Stay informed. Stay pushing for a time where we can reasonably call ourselves post-COVID.
