Outside MA: The EU Revisited in July 2021

Periodically, I look at states and countries where I have friends and/or family to see how those states are doing with COVID-19 cases. I always take a look at the population size of the state as well so that the comparison I'm making to MA numbers is somewhat valid.

Today: EVERY EU COUNTRY! Buckle up, it's gonna be a long trek.  Feel free to look for a particular country that is of interest to you.  They're alphabetically organized.

Preview: most countries in the EU were able to reduce spread from their last wave till June but have seen a sharp uptick in cases in July.

Before we get started, let's remind ourselves of how MA has done.
  • MA
    • First wave peaked at 35.8 cases per day per 100,000
    • In the summer of 2020, we got down to 2.7 for 5-July-2020 but then slowly crept back up for the remainder of the summer and in the fall saw those cases pick up.
    • We had our "fall" peak at 73 cases on 9-Dec-2020, followed by a brief decline down to 56 for 25-Dec-2020 and then a rapid climb up to 94 for 12-Jan-2021.
    • We worked our numbers down to 20.3 for early March but then brought those numbers back up to 34 by 11-Apr-2021.
    • We then managed to get down to 0.9 cases per 100,000 per day but are now on the rise again.
    • Current:
      • Spread: 1.1 cases per 100,000 per day
      • Vaccination:
        • Fully Vaccinated: 62.6%
        • At-least-one-dose: 71.2%
        • At-least-one-dose increasing at 0.07% per day
One quick note about vaccinations.  The at-least-one-dose rate by itself doesn't matter much but it does give a good idea as to how quickly the fully vaccinated percentage will increase in the next month.  Additionally, the rate at which the at-least-one-dose is increasing indicates the new vaccinations that are taking place and can be viewed as an indication of how quickly the fully vaccinated percentage will continue to go up after a month from now.  For example, in Massachusetts, while we've done better than most EU countries with getting people vaccinated, we've failed to maintain the effort and the backlog is miniscule in comparison to most EU countries and our longer term increases are also small.
  • Austria
    • Their first wave reached 8.8 cases per 100,000 per day in late March 2020 but they got a handle on things really quickly and by mid-April 2020 were down to only 1.2 cases per 100,000 per day.
    • They spent all of May and June 2020 below 1 case per 100,000 per day but were very slowly increasing by the end of June.  They reached 3.4 cases per 100,000 per day in early September 2020, had a brief quick climb to 7.9 for the end of September, plateauing there for about a week before a rapid increase in October and early November, reaching their peak of 84.3 cases per 100,000 per day in mid-November.
    • They then rapidly decreased their spread through the rest of November and December, getting it down to just 21.0 cases per 100,000 per day before the end of the year.  They managed to dip a bit further in late January and early February 2021 to reach 15.1 cases per 100,000 per day before a steady increase through the end of March, reaching 37.0 cases per 100,000 per day.
    • They have since pushed their cases steadily downward to just 0.8 cases per 100,000 per day the 7 days leading to July 4 2021.  Sadly, this decrease has been reversed in the week since and they are back to a increasing spread.
    • Current:
      • Spread: 1.4 cases per 100,000 per day
      • Vaccinations:
        • Fully Vaccinated: 41.8%
        • At-least-one-dose: 62.7%
        • At-least-one-dose increasing at 0.27% per day
  • Belgium
    • They had a slow first wave in spring 2020, reaching 12.4 cases per 100,000 per day in mid-April.
    • They spent all of June and most of July below 1.6 cases per 100,000 per day, at one point even reaching 0.6 cases per 100,000 per day. They then started a slow climb through mid-August to 5.6 cases per 100,000 per day, then a very slow decline in cases through early September before their rapid increase in late September and October, peaking at 155.3 cases per 100,000 per day!
    • They then spent November with just as sharp a decline in cases, reaching 23.9 cases per 100,000 per day before slowing their decrease.
    • They spent most of December through early March hovering around 14-22 cases per 100,000 per day but then had another wave in March 2021 which reached 42.1 cases per 100,000 per day at its peak at the end of March.
    • They have since spent much of their time slowly decreasing cases down to 3.8 cases per 100,000 per day but have spent late June and early July increasing again.
    • Current:
      • Spread: 9.0 cases per 100,000 per day
      • Vaccinations:
        • Fully Vaccinated: 40.1%
        • At-least-one-dose: 65.7%
        • At-least-one-dose increasing at 0.49% per day
  • Bulgaria
    • Bulgaria never really had a first wave and instead saw single digits in cases per 100,000 people per day through to the end of September.
    • October saw a fast climb which slowed at the start of November and peaked at 47.9 cases per 100,000 per day.
    • They then decreased cases to 6.0 cases per 100,000 per day for late January before having a slow climb for the start of February, leading to a steeper climb in late February and into March, reaching 51.8 cases per 100,000 per day for the end of March.
    • They then drove cases down to 3.3 cases per 100,000 per day by the end of May before slowing their progress.
    • Current:
      • Spread: 0.9 cases per 100,000 per day
      • Vaccinations:
        • Fully Vaccinated: 12.1%
        • At-least-one-dose: 14.3%
        • At-least-one-dose increasing at 0.6% per day
  • Croatia
    • Croatia saw single digit cases per day per 100,000 people through the end of September.
    • They saw a rather quick rise in cases from October through mid December 2020, reaching 89.5 cases per 100,00 per day.
    • Their cases fell off a cliff after that peek though, reaching 29.9 cases per 100,000 per day before the end of the year and slowly declining through mid-February 2021 to reach 7.6 cases per 100,000 per day before their second wave started.
    • Their second wave peeked at 54.1 cases per 100,000 per day in mid April 2021.
    • They managed to get their cases down to 2.7 cases per 100,000 per day by mid June before stabilizing at around 1.5-2.0 cases per 100,000 per day
    • Current:
      • Spread: 2.1 cases per 100,000 per day
      • Vaccinations:
        • Fully Vaccinated: 30.6%
        • At-least-one-dose: 37.9%
        • At-least-one-dose increasing at 0.14% per day
  • Cyprus
    • Cyprus started with a small first wave that maxed out at around 4.6 cases per day per 100,00 people back at the start of April.
    • They then saw a period of single digit cases overall across the entire 876k population for a few months, followed by a period in August that sort of looks like a second wave when compared to the first wave.
    • And then came October through December, where they saw their first true wave which reached 69.0 cases per 100,000 per day for the start of January 2021.
    • They turned the corner in January, plummeting down to 14.6 cases per 100,000 per day  by the end of the month and continuing to slowly decrease from there down to 12.2 in mid February.
    • They then rocketed up in late February and early March to 43.0 cases per 100,000 per day, followed by very slowly decreasing for a couple weeks before continuing their climb throughout April to reach 100.6 cases per 100,000 per day.
    • They spent all of May dropping cases like a stone, reaching 6.7 cases per 100,000 per day for the start of June before plateauing until the end of June.
    • Unfortunately, the end of June brought a devastatingly quick spike in cases that they haven't seen the peak of yet and are currently at 97.5 cases per 100,000 per day and climbing.
    • Current:
      • Spread: 97.5 cases per 100,000 per day
      • Vaccinations:
        • Fully Vaccinated: 46.2%
        • At-least-one-dose: 54.7%

        • 46.2% fully vaccinated; at-least-one-dose increasing at 0.21% per day
  • Czech Republic
    • Like Cyprus, you almost wouldn't notice the first wave back in March when looking at the overall timeline, never seeing a single day above 3.5 cases per 100,000 people.
    • September started their fall wave and they reached their peak by the end of October/early November.  At this peak, they saw a huge 120.5 cases per 100,000 people per day
    • They then quickly brought their numbers down, reaching a low of about 32 cases per 100,000 per day for mid-December before climbing again to 121.6 cases per 100,000 per day by mid-January 2021.
    • They had some brief success, dropping cases down to 65 about 2 weeks after the peak at the start of the month.
    • The start of February saw a slow start to the increase and then in the middle of February the next steep increase came, reaching 115.5 cases per 100,000 per day by early March 2021.
    • They have since been able to get cases under control again, reaching 1.3 by mid-June 2021.  Sadly, like many other places, they are seeing a return of increased cases, though it is very slow.
    • Current:
      • Spread: 1.4 cases per 100,000 per day
      • Vaccinations: 35.8% fully vaccinated; at-least-one-dose increasing at 0.16% per day
  • Denmark
    • Their first "wave" saw a peak in April with 5.7 cases per 100,000 per day.
    • They spent most of May through mid-August 2020 below 2 cases per 100,000 per day, even getting as low as 0.3 cases per 100,000 per day for much of that time
    • They then started increasing in September reaching 23 cases per 100,000 per day by early December before hitting their winter spike and seeing the rate climb to 60.7 cases per 100,000 per day over the course of 3 weeks.
    • They then worked at decreasing their spread and got down to 7.8 cases per 100,000 per day for the start of February 2021.
    • They bounced between 7.8 and 18.1 cases per 100,000 per day until the start of June when they pushed their cases down to 3.2 cases per 100,000 per day by the end of the month.
    • Unfortunately, spread has returned in July.
    • Current:
      • Spread: 9.6 cases per 100,000 per day

  • Estonia
    • Their first "wave" peaked at 4.1 cases per day per 100,000 people followed by single-digit cases across their 1.325 million people from the start of May through mid-August.
    • Their second wave started with a slow increase of cases through September and October and then as November hit, so did the significant rise in cases, reaching 43.2 cases per 100,000 per day by late December 2020.
    • They plateaued at around that level through early February when they saw their steepest climb in cases, reaching 111.2 cases per 100,000 per day by late March.
    • As March closed out, their cases started to plummet, reaching 9.1 cases per 100,000 per day at the start of June before slowing in its dissent.  They continued until late June when they reached a bottom at 1.7 cases per 100,000 per day.  They started their climb as June ended.
    • Current:
      • Spread: 3.2 cases per 100,000 per day

        • At-least-one-dose increasing at 0.16% per day
  • Finland - or the case of a country that handled things well.
    • Their first wave peaked at just 2.9 cases per day per 100,000 people.  The fact that I'm not putting wave here in quotes should tell you a little about how well they've managed things.
    • They got below 1.0 case per 100,000 per day before the end of May and stayed below that level of spread through mid September.
    • Their second wave rapidly sped up at the end of September and by October it had reached a whopping 4.3 cases per 100,000 per day before steadying out.
    • Mid November 2020 saw the spread increase again, reaching 8.6 cases per 100,000 per day by mid-December.  They stayed around that high for a week before dropping back down to 4.3 cases per 100,000 per day for the end of 2020.
    • They maintained that 4.3 cases per 100,000 per day until a new wave started in late January that brought them to a new high of 13.2 cases per 100,000 per day in mid March before they declared that enough was enough and dropped back down to 3.6 cases per 100,000 per day by early May, plateauing at that level until late May when they got back to reducing the spread down to 1.2 cases per 100,000 per day by mid-June.
    • Unfortunately, they've seen a resurgence in cases since then, reaching a staggering 4.2 cases per 100,000 per day today.
    • Current:
      • Spread: 4.2 cases per 100,000 per day

  • France
    • Their first "wave" reached 6.7 cases per 100,000 per day in early April and they easily pushed things back to the point where May through the end of July they had 1.6 cases per 100,000 per day or lower, reaching at times lower than 0.6 cases per 100,000 per day.
    • August began a slow climb to 18 cases per 100,000 per day by the end of September before speeding up in October to reach 81.2 cases per 100,000 per day in early November.
    • They then dropped their cases down to 17 cases per 100,000 per day before November was out.
    • They climbed to 22.3 during December, dropped to 13.6 in the last week of December, and then returned back up to 30.5 cases per 100,000 per day for mid January, where they stayed all the way to mid March.
    • Mid March, however, saw another wave, climbing to 58.0 cases per 100,000 per day by the end of March and not receding until mid April.
    • After mid April they saw a steady decline in cases through the end of June, getting as low as 2.7 cases per 100,000 per day before seeing cases start to tick up again in July.
    • Current:
      • Spread: 4.9 cases per 100,000 per day
      • Vaccinations:
        • Fully Vaccinated: 36.4%

  • Germany
    • Germany's first wave reached 7.0 cases per 100,000 per day at the start of April 2020 and receded to 1.2 by the start of May.  They spent most of May through July 2020 closer to 0.5 cases per 100,000 per day than 1.0 case per 100,000 per day, but by August were very very slowly increasing, reaching 2.6 cases per 100,000 per day by the start of October 2020 (keep in mind, we in MA never got down to 2.6 during 2020).
    • October brought with it a quicker climb in the spread and they reached 23.8 cases per 100,000 per day by early November before stabilizing at around this level of spread into early December 2020.
    • Mid December brought a return of increasing cases and they reached 31.0 cases per 100,000 per day just before Christmas.
    • They locked down and drove their cases down 17.2 cases per 100,000 per day for early January before seeing a brief resurgence to 26.7 cases per 100,000 per day and then dropping to 8.7 cases per 100,000 per day for late February.
    • They then climbed to 23.6 cases per 100,000 per day for late April 2020 before really returning to driving down the spread to 0.7 cases per 100,000 per day in late June.
    • Cases to appear to be back on the rise in recent days though without the indicators from other regions, it would be a little too soon to tell.
    • Current:
      • Spread: 0.9 cases per 100,000 per day
      • Vaccinations:
        • Fully Vaccinated: 42.2%

  • Greece - No Finland but still damn good in comparison to many others.
    • Greece reached 0.8 cases per 100,000 per day in early April... 0.8, just pause and consider that was thee peak of their first wave.  Their summer trough was less than 0.2 cases per 100,000 per day.
    • They did see cases start to increase throughout July, August, and September, reaching a whopping 3.7 cases per 100,000 per day in mid October before the spread really started.  They reached 24.9 by mid November before the wave receded and by late December they had gotten back down to 5.8 cases per 100,000 per day.
    • They stuck around there, even dipping down briefly to 4.2 cases per 100,000 per day in late January before a new wave started.  This new wave peaked in early April at 28.7 cases per 100,000 per day.
    • They then dropped to 15.4 for early May before a quick 1-week resurgence to 23.4 cases per 100,000 per day followed by a steep decline in cases to 3.4 cases per 100,000 per day by the end of June.
    • Unfortunately they've seen a steep climb again in July and are now at 17.1 cases per 100,000 per day
    • Current:
      • Spread: 17.1 cases per 100,000 per day

        • At-least-one-dose increasing at 0.38% per day
  • Hungary
    • Similar to Greece, they had what I suppose you could call a wave in April 2020 that reached a whopping 1.0 cases per 100,000 per day... they then spent most of May and all of June, July and then most of August below 0.5 cases per 100,000 per day.
    • They did see cases increasing in August, however and had gotten back up to 1.4 cases per 100,000 per day by its end.  That increase sped up in September and really sped up in late October and they reached 58.2 cases per 100,000 per day for early December before starting to consistently drive down cases.
    • They got down to 16.4 cases per 100,000 per day for the end of the year and then plateaued there until Mid February.
    • The second half of February and all of March would see the steepest climb in cases they have seen, leading to a peek of 93.3 cases per 100,000 per day in the end of March, followed by an even steeper decline in cases throughout April and May, reaching 4.0 cases per 100,000 per day before slowing.
    • They have maintained their reduction in cases ever since, though at a slightly slower rate than in April/May.
    • Current:
      • Spread: 0.3 cases per 100,000 per day

    • Cases slowly throughout August and September to 7.6 cases per 100,000 per day for the start of October, and that's when cases started climbing a bit quicker, reaching 23.8 cases per 100,000 per day in mid October, to fall off again and reach 7.6 again by mid November.
    • Cases were below 6.1 for most of the first half of December before climbing again, this time reaching 133.2 cases per 100,000 per day by mid January 2021.
    • They managed to drop cases just as quickly as they had picked them up for the second half of January, going down to 26.2 cases per 100,000 per day by the end of January before slowing the decline.
    • They kept decreasing through to near the end of June, reaching 6.3 cases per 100,000 per day before returning to increasing in the last couple weeks.

    • They dropped in between waves to fewer than 0.5 cases per 100,000 per day.
    • Late July and into August saw a very very slow increase, not getting back above 1 case per 100,000 per day until late July and reaching only 2.9 cases per 100,000 per day by the end of September.
    • That's when their second wave began in earnest and they climbed to 58.1 cases per 100,000 per day for mid November.
    • They worked to get the spread under control and got back down to 21.3 cases per 100,000 per day before year's end.
    • Spiking for about a week to 28 cases per 100,000 per day at the start of January, they returned to a steady 20 cases per 100,000 per day for the last week of January and the first 2/3 of February.
    • The end of February brought and end of that stability though and they increased to 37.1 cases per 100,000 per day by mid March.
    • Since mid March, they have seen a stead decrease through to the end of June, reaching 1.0 case per 100,000 per day.

  • Latvia
    • At the peak of their first "wave" at the start of April 2020, it looks like they had 1.8 cases per 100,000 per day before dropping to fewer than 0.5 cases 100,000 per day from mid April all the way through mid September.
    • Late September 2020 did bring an increase in cases and they steadily rose to 46.3 cases per 100,000 per day for Christmas and then had a bumpy route to further fall and climb 52.6 cases per 100,000 per day for mid January 2021.
    • They slowly reduced cases down to 25.6 cases per 100,000 per day by Mid March and fluctuated between 20.8 and 32.9 cases per 100,000 per day through to the start of May.
    • After a brief climb to 36.3 cases per 100,000 per day in mid May, they have since been steadily decreasing their spread down to 2.0 cases per 100,000 per day today.

    • They did start to increase in cases in August, but very slowly, reaching 1.4 cases per 100,000 per day by mid September.
    • Unfortunately, they started seeing real increases in mid October and kept going through November and December to reach 109.7 cases per 100,000 per day for Christmas.
    • They did then push their cases down to 17.0 cases per 100,000 per day in February before, with a brief bump to 25.9 cases per 100,000 per day in early March, slowly increasing to 42.4 cases per 100,000 per day in mid May.
    • They spent the second half of May and all of June driving their cases down to reach 1.1 cases per 100,000 per day for the start of July.
    • They do appear to be seeing some increasing spread in recent days.
    • Current:
      • Spread: 1.5 cases per 100,000 per day
      • Vaccinations:
        • Fully Vaccinated: 40.6%

  • Luxembourg
    • They started with a first wave in late March 2020 that reached 27.0 cases per 100,000 per day.
    • They were able to drive those cases down to fewer than 1.7 cases per 100,000 per day for most of May and June.
    • They had a small wave that reached 17.1 cases per 100,000 per day in July and then spent August and the first half of September fluctuating between 4.5 and 8.1 cases per 100,000 per day.
    • October brought a rapid climb and they reached 111.4 cases per 100,000 per day by the start of November.
    • They had a slow decrease in cases from there till mid December, seeing 69.2 cases per 100,000 per day before a relatively quick decline down to 28.0 for the start of 2021.
    • They then jumped around a bit, with a low of 19.4 and climbing to 40.4 by the end of March before slowly and steadily decreasing cases in the latter half of April through June, getting down to 1.5 cases per 100,000 per day.
    • July hasn't been kind though, and they have jumped back up to 22.8 cases per 100,000 per day
    • Current:
      • Spread: 22.8 cases per 100,000 per day
      • Vaccinations:

  • Malta
    • Malta had 4.5 cases per 100,000 per day at the peak of their first wave at the start of April and then had a long period of nearly no cases... there was even a 8 day period where they saw no new cases at all!
    • They saw cases start to increase in August and it was a bumpy climb with decreases happening roughly at the end of each month and then climbs in between.
      • August peak: 9.0; early September valley: 4.6
      • September peak: 10.7; late September valley: 5.6
      • October peak: 27.7; late October valley: 19.1
      • November peak: 28.3; mid December valley: 15.5
      • Early January peak: 38.2; early February valley: 22.3
      • Mid March peak: 62.9
    • The Mid March peak seemed to be the final straw for them and they dropped the spread in a hurry, reducing down to just 9.9 cases per 100,000 per day 2 weeks later.
    • They plateaued at that point for a couple weeks before moving to a more gradual decline in cases, getting down to around 1 case per 100,000 per day by mid May and staying below that level of spread through to the end of June.
    • They have seen a spike in cases in July like so many others.
    • Current:
      • Spread: 11.5 cases per 100,000 per day
      • Vaccinations: There's no way around this, they're just doing better than we are here

    • They spent the second half of May through the end of July at 1.2 cases per 100,000 per day or lower, reaching as low as 0.3 cases per 100,000 per day at times.
    • The increases they saw in July and into August brought them to 3.6 cases per 100,000 per day mid August, which they decreased slightly for the second half of August before starting what would end up being their first big wave, culminating at the end of August with a rate of 58.0 cases per 100,000 per day.
    • They quickly decreased their spread and by mid November had gotten down to 31.3 cases per 100,000 per day but then their progress stagnated and as December began, so did the second of their major waves.  The second wave reached its peak just before Christmas at 67.2 cases per 100,000 per day.
    • The decline in January and into early February was slightly less quick than what they had seen in late November but they got further before their progress slowed again, reaching 19.6 cases per 100,000 per day.
    • They then slowly increased again starting in late February and, with a few valleys in between, reached 48.0 cases per 100,000 per day by late April.
    • They slowly decreased their cases again, this time going lower and by late June had reached 3.4 cases per 100,000 per day.
    • July has seen a sharp resurgence though and they've reached 32.5 cases per 100,000 per day with no sign of slowing.

    • They very very slowly started increasing in late July, reaching 1.6 by mid September... and then the cases started coming in quicker.
    • Their first true wave peaked in early November with 67.5 cases per 100,000 per day.
    • They worked, with some hiccups, through January 2021 on decreasing their cases and reached 13.7 cases per 100,000 per day but by mid February they were back to increasing again.
    • Their second wave peaked at the end of March with 75.6 cases per 100,000 per day.
    • April through May they made great progress reducing cases and they're still doing so, though slower.

    • They started creeping back up from mid August through the end of September, reaching 7.0 cases per 100,000 per day by the end of September before really picking up the pace in October.  They climbed to 62.3 cases per 100,000 per day by mid November before reversing course and driving cases down to 37.1 cases per 100,000 per day for early December and then spent nearly all of December more slowly reducing cases back down to 28.4.
    • The start of January 2021 saw the start of an even faster climb in cases than they had experienced previously and by month's end, they had reached 125.4 cases per 100,000 per day.
    • February 2021 saw an even quicker fall in cases as they plummeted to just 10.4 cases per 100,000 per day before the end of the month which coincided with a slow down in that reduction.
    • They managed to slowly reduce cases through the month of March down to 4.3 by April but then plateaued a bit, bouncing up and down slightly through the start of May before seeing a shallow but sustained rise in cases through mid June and are now seeing a bit quicker of a rise in cases at the end of June and first half of July.

    • October saw a rapid climb and they reached 79.3 before roughly steadying out for most of November and then falling, with a couple hiccups, in December and January to 13 cases per 100,000 per day by late January and plateauing their progress through mid February.
    • Mid February through late March had a steady increase in cases, reaching 29.1 cases per 100,000 per day before a sustained drop off in cases which has slowed late June and early July but is still going down.

    • Since the start of March, they've been decreasing cases though this decrease has progressively slowed throughout and, having reached 0.3 cases per 100,000 per day for the start of July, there is a current potential increase in the last couple days, though it's too soon to tell if the last 7 day's trend will continue (Slovakia not being the only place we're seeing a trend like this, I suspect it will).

    • Their first wave "peaked" at 10.4 cases per 100,000 per day but it was a long wave which was essentially just a very very slow climb in cases over the course of 4 months and then a decline over the course of July.
    • They spent August around 1-2 cases per 100,000 per day.
    • Then, from October (shocking, I know) through December they climbed to 66.3.

    • From there, they quickly reduced cases again to 27.6 by the end of January.
    • February through mid April saw a long march back up to 61.7 cases per 100,000 per day followed by a sustained decline down to 2.3
    • Unlike many of their EU neighbors, Sweden does not appear to be in an upswing yet.
