Fun with MA COVID-19 Reporting 24-Aug-2021 Edition

It's a week before September 2021.  This time in 2020, we saw 303.4 cases per day (4.4 cases per 100,000 people per day) and had about 160 people in the hospital for COVID-19, about 40 of whom were in the ICU and about 20 of whom were intubated.  We also saw 15 people dying per day.

Last week we, by contrast, we saw more than 1226.9 cases per day (17.8 cases per 100,000 people per day) (and, as usual, expect that number to increase substantially over the next few days).  We've reached 575 people in the hospital, 140 of whom are in the ICU and 63 are intubated... 165 of those hospitalized were fully vaccinated when they caught COVID-19 (28%).  We only saw 4.7 people die per day, so that's something... but imagine where that number could be if we had all kept up precautions as we entered the summer.

I've been saying for a couple weeks that we were in October 2020 spread levels... the last week of October saw 1165.4 cases per day (16.9 cases per 100,000 people per day).  In terms of Hospitalizations, we're closer to early November 2020 levels, with November 7 2020 seeing 568 hospitalized, 144 of whom were in the ICU and 62 were intubated.  As a reminder, on November 13, 2020, it was reported that we were re-opening the DCU field hospital in Worcester due to concerns over stretching our hospital capacity.  Throughout this period in 2020, we were seeing about 20 people dying per day so, again, we're doing better than we were ... but ...

Anyway, below is an updated summary of our progression this summer (numbers going back to June 13 are still fluctuating with June 13-19 increasing by about 2 cases per day and June 20-26 decreasing by 0.3 cases per day since the last time I provided this summary one week ago, the statement in [] after each is a comparison to what we knew of the week on Aug 17)
  • June 13-19 2021 -  72.3 cases per day (1.05 cases per 100,000 people per day) [slight increase]
  • June 20-26 2021 -  65.7 cases per day (0.96 cases per 100,000 people per day) [very slight decrease]

  • July 4-10 2021  -  117.7 cases per day (1.71 cases per 100,000 people per day) [very slight increase]

  • Aug 01-07 2021-  996.0 cases per day (14.45 cases per 100,000 people per day) [increase]
  • Aug 08-14 2021-1152.0 cases per day (16.71 cases per 100,000 people per day) [roughly 50 more cases per day]
  • Aug 15-21 2021-1226.9 cases per day (17.80 cases per 100,000 people per day)

If you haven't gotten vaccinated, please do.

Stay safe. Stay informed.
