Fun with MA COVID-19 Reporting 03-Jan-2022 Edition
Even if we didn't see more cases come in for last week, last week was a monster. Just overall, last week already is nearly twice the total cases of the prior week, which itself had been the highest case count we had ever seen. Given that, it shouldn't surprise you too much to hear the next bit, but it might still give you pause. Until the week of Dec 19-25 2021, the highest single-day case count was on January 4 with 9,031 cases. The week of Dec 19-25 2021 saw 3 days with higher case counts, Monday through Wednesday saw 9,332, 10,149, and 10,829 respectively. Last week, the same days of the week are already known to have reached 19,784, 21,924, and 21,423. And Wednesday has reached 13,936.
And then there were the deaths. The deaths that have been reported thus far do not catch up to the week prior yet, but that's with only 5 days being reported. With an average 34 deaths per day for the first 5 days, it seems reasonable to expect that we'll more than reach the 195 deaths from the week prior (only would need to find out about 24 more deaths.... 24, by the way is a number of deaths that we have only seen 1 day not reach in the last 2 weeks.
Hospitalization use, while it continued to increase the week of Dec 19-25, it was around one sixth to one fifth the increase we had seen the weeks prior.... last week was about double what we'd seen in those same weeks. We now have more people in hospitals for COVID-19 than all but 15 days in the second wave and all but 44 days in the first wave.
Stay safe. Stay informed.
