Fun with MA COVID-19 Reporting 30-Jun-2022 Greater-Greater Somerville Edition
Just a friendly reminder that I'm using state numbers for total cases in reporting from each week but using a calculation that is a better approximation of the cases we've seen every 2 weeks by taking the totals from the report 2 weeks ago and comparing to the report of the week. Recognizing that the detailed view isn't for everybody, I'm boiling it down to the highs/lows for 2021 and providing only this year's detailed information here. The highs and lows of 2021 are still important because it gives us perspective both on the super-high from this winter as well as the not-so-great low from a few weeks ago. This is obviously an over-simplification but might be easier to read than the full details. The detailed week-by-week information going back further can be found at the bottom of this post.

- Blue - 19 (2 fewer than last week) (Less than 1.5 cases per 100,000 people per day; this is the CDC's "Low Transmission" category)
- Green - 5 (3 more than last week) (Greater than 1.5 and less than 4 cases per 100,000 people per day; this roughly overlaps with the CDC's "Moderate Transmission" which is 1.5 to 7.1)
- Yellow - 19 (1 fewer than last week) (Greater than or equal to 4 and less than 8 cases per 100,000 people per day; note that 7.1 to14.2 is the CDC's range for "Substantial Transmission")
- Orange - 116 (21 more than last week) (Greater than or equal to 8 and less than 16 cases per 100,000 people per day)
- Red - 144 (9 fewer than last week) (Greater than or equal to 16 and less than 24 cases per 100,000 people per day; note: 14.2 or higher is what the CDC considers "High Transmission" which is their highest category of spread so their highest category starts slightly below Red)
- Maroon - 42 (13 fewer than last week) (Greater than or equal to 24 and less than 40 cases per 100,000 people per day)
- Purple - 6 (same as last week) (Greater than or equal to 40 and less than 64 cases per 100,000 people per day)
- Black - 2 (1 more than last week)(Greater than or equal to 64 and less than 100 cases per 100,000 people per day)
- Black w/Italic Text - 0 (same as last week)(Greater than or equal to 100 and less than 200 cases per 100,000 people per day)
- Black w/Underlined Bold Italics - 0 (same as last week) (Greater than or equal to 200 and less than 300 cases per 100,000 people per day)

Summary: Well... it was nice to be reducing spread for while it lasted... of the locales I track, 3 increased spread and only Springfield really reduced spread substantially.

Information closest to the city/town name is the most recent information and spans backward in time, one week's report at a time, so that a comparison can be drawn of how we went from doing ok in the summer of 2020, to doing really badly over the winter, to doing really well in the spring of 2021, and then how we've done since. We were able to get the spread down to "Low transmission" briefly in many areas while still in phase 3 of our re-opening plan so beating COVID-19 is entirely possible, we just have to try as a wider community to get there.
