Fun with MA COVID-19 Reporting 05-Aug-2021 Greater-Greater Somerville Edition

Updating color coding to include "blue" which aligns roughly with the CDC "Low Transmission" so that we now have each of the CDC transmission levels accounted for clearly.    Also updating to separate the counts into 3-month groupings so that it's easier to track across time and make appropriate comparisons (in the future, this will allow easier December 2021-to-December 2020 review for instance).

Just a friendly reminder that I'm using state numbers for total cases in reporting from each week but using a calculation that is a better approximation of the cases we've seen every 2 weeks by taking the totals from the report 2 weeks ago and comparing to the report of the week.  For an explanation of why this is more appropriate, read over my post about it: https://funwithmacovid-19reporting.blogspot.com/2020/10/why-weekly-community-numbers-reported.html

  • Blue - Less than 1.5 cases per 100,000 people per day (this is approximately the "Low transmission" from the CDC)
  • Green - Greater than or equal to 1.5 and less than 4 cases per 100,000 people per day (included in "Moderate transmission" spread from the CDC)
  • Yellow - Greater than or equal to 4 and less than 8 cases per 100,000 people per day (included in "Moderate transmission" spread from the CDC)
  • Orange - Greater than or equal to 8 and less than 16 cases per 100,000 people per day (this is approximately the "Substantial transmission" spread from the CDC)
  • Red - Greater than or equal to 16 and less than 24 cases per 100,000 people per day (this and above is approximately the "High transmission" spread from the CDC)
  • Maroon- Greater than or equal to 24 and less than 40 cases per 100,000 people per day
  • Purple- Greater than or equal to 40 and less than 64 cases per 100,000 people per day
  • Black - Greater than or equal to 64 cases per 100,000 people per day
Information closest to the city/town name is the most recent information and spans backward in time so that a comparison can be made not just to the worst spread or the last few weeks' but going back to last summer.... Aka, it's a reminder that as good as things look in comparison to January, we're not back to where we were yet.

Number of cities/towns with each designation with my calculation:
  • Green - 114 (78 fewer than last week) (Less than 4 cases per 100,000 people per day)
  • Yellow - 119 (11 fewer than last week) (Greater than or equal to 4 and less than 8 cases per 100,000 people per day)
  • Orange - 102 (75 more than last week) (Greater than or equal to 8 and less than 16 cases per 100,000 people per day)
  • Red - 12 (10 more than last week) (Greater than or equal to 16 and less than 24 cases per 100,000 people per day)
  • Maroon- 3 (3 more than last week) (Greater than or equal to 24 and less than 40 cases per 100,000 people per day)
  • Purple- 1 (1 more than last week) (Greater than or equal to 40 and less than 64 cases per 100,000 people per day)
  • Black - 0 (same as last week)(Greater than or equal to 64 cases per 100,000 people per day).

Summary: Am I supposed to be happy than 2 cities/towns I monitor remain yellow?  There are 4 cities/towns in MA that have 24+ cases per 100,000 people per day where there were none last week and Nantucket jumped from 16.3 to 51.9 in 1 week!  Of the places I monitor, Chelsea, Lawrence, and Lynn are the only ones doing better than they were doing in October 2020.

Have a city/town you'd like me to keep track of?  Let me know and I'll get started.

Stay safe. Stay informed.
