Fun with MA COVID-19 Reporting 09-Aug-2021 Edition

We now know that last week was the second week in a row with an average daily increase to hospital use in the low double digits... these are two of only three weeks this entire calendar year that had double digit increases.  In terms of new hospitalizations, that number is also increasing (though we only get new data on this once per week so we're about a week behind).  We went for 7 weeks of averaging 11-18 new hospitalizations per day to the week of Jul 25-Jul 31 seeing an average of 34 new hospitalizations per day. July 25-Jul 31 was nearly double the prior week and the prior week had been a 7-week high.

The good news is that, while we've only seen 1 day since March 18, 2020 where nobody died of COVID-19, we're back down to seeing an average daily death rate of 2 again as of the week before last and potentially just below 2 for last week (we're still waiting for data on Saturday's deaths and any given day of last week may still increase).

Finally, cases.  Last Wednesday, I predicted that by the end of this week, we'd find that last week reached the average 1015.7 cases per day that we saw October 18-24 2020 and we're well on our way there and already seeing that we had at least a 19% increase week-over-week (or 78% increase if you look back to 2 weeks prior).  Below are the updated numbers.

  • June 13-19 2021 - 71.9 cases per day (1.04 cases per 100,000 people per day)
  • June 20-26 2021 - 66.1 cases per day (0.96 cases per 100,000 people per day)
  • Jun 27-Jul 3 2021-78.7 cases per day (1.14 cases per 100,000 people per day)
  • July 4-10 2021  - 117.6 cases per day (1.71 cases per 100,000 people per day)
  • July 11-17 2021- 264.1 cases per day (3.83 cases per 100,000 people per day)
  • July 18-24 2021- 478.3 cases per day (6.94 cases per 100,000 people per day)
  • July 25-31 2021- 714.9 cases per day (10.37 cases per 100,000 people per day)
  • Aug 01-07 2021 - 854.8 cases per day (12.40 cases per 100,000 people per day)
Stay safe. Stay informed.
