Fun with MA COVID-19 Reporting 25-Aug-2021 Edition

It's Wednesday, which means we have an update on the new hospitalizations we've seen in the last week.  Not surprisingly, we've continued the steady increase we've been experiencing since late July:

June 13-19 2021 -  13.4
June 20-26 2021 -  12.7
Jun 27-Jul 3 2021- 11.4
July 4-10 2021    -  14.3
July 11-17 2021  -  14.3
July 18-24 2021  -  17.9
July 25-31 2021  -  34.0
Aug 01-07 2021  -  42.7
Aug 08-14 2021  -  57.7
Aug 15-21 2021  -  68.3

Sticking with hospitals for a moment, last week saw another increase in the daily increase of hospital use.  The weeks of July 25-August 14 we were seeing about 11-12.5 more hospital beds being in use per day.  That average shifted up to 19.3 more beds being in use per day, finishing off the week with a total of 519 beds in use as of Saturday (increasing to 569 yesterday).  ICU bed usage increase has also seen an uptick with the same weeks seeing 1.7-3.1 more ICU beds being in use per day to last week seeing 7.1 more ICU beds being in use, ending last week with a total of 129 ICU beds being in use (145 as of yesterday).  And you guessed it, intubation count increase ticked up too with the prior 3 weeks seeing an average daily increase of less than 1 new intubation per day (2.1 in the middle of the 3 weeks) but seeing 3.7 more patients per day last week being intubated, finishing the week with 61 (72 as of yesterday).

Quick update on cases from last week, we ticked up by 50 cases per day to reach 1277.6 (18.5 cases per 100,000 per day).  We also see more than twice the cases so far this week as we did this time last week.

But sure, I don't see any reason for concern... all of this seems normal, right?

On a positive note, waste water tracking does appear to show that we've peaked and are declining in spread... though it's too soon to tell from that and we're also about to see a holiday weekend and schools are about to come back into session... so what could possibly go wrong?

Stay safe. Stay informed.
