Fun with MA COVID-19 Reporting 31-Mar-2022 Greater-Greater Somerville Edition

Just a friendly reminder that I'm using state numbers for total cases in reporting from each week but using a calculation that is a better approximation of the cases we've seen every 2 weeks by taking the totals from the report 2 weeks ago and comparing to the report of the week.  For an explanation of why this is more appropriate, read over my post about it: https://funwithmacovid-19reporting.blogspot.com/2020/10/why-weekly-community-numbers-reported.html

Information closest to the city/town name is the most recent information and spans backward in time, one week's report at a time, so that a comparison can be drawn of how we went from doing ok in the summer of 2020, to doing really badly over the winter, to doing really well in the spring of 2021, and then how we've done since.  We were able to get the spread down to "Low transmission" briefly in many areas while still in phase 3 of our re-opening plan so beating COVID-19 is entirely possible, we just have to try as a wider community to get there.

  • Blue - 24 (10 fewer than last week) (Less than 1.5 cases per 100,000 people per day; this is the CDC's "Low Transmission" category)
  • Green - 22 (same as last week) (Greater than 1.5 and less than 4 cases per 100,000 people per day; this roughly overlaps with the CDC's "Moderate Transmission" which is 1.5 to 7.1)
  • Yellow - 81 (31 fewer than last week) (Greater than or equal to 4 and less than 8 cases per 100,000 people per day; note that 7.1 to14.2 is the CDC's range for "Substantial Transmission")
  • Orange - 150 (7 more than last week) (Greater than or equal to 8 and less than 16 cases per 100,000 people per day)

Summary: Amherst and Chelsea, you two are impressive.  You have continued to decrease your spread this week when all the others I track returned to increasing if they hadn't already.  And Cambridge... you are one of 2 locales with more than 40 cases per 100k people per day, and the other locale is a lower rate and has only 2 cases (with 336 residents, one case more or one case fewer can shift the rate drastically).  At 45.7 cases per 100k people per day, Cambridge is back to being 3 times the entry point to the highest spread level the CDC has and is seeing greater spread than they did in all of 2021 with the exception of December... yes, they're seeing more spread than they did at the peak of the second wave already.  More generally, 237 locales got worse and only 73 got better with this review of 2-week averages, and 168 of those locales that got worse increased their spread by 25% or more.
