Fun with MA COVID-19 Reporting 26-Aug-2021 Greater-Greater Somerville Edition

Just a friendly reminder that I'm using state numbers for total cases in reporting from each week but using a calculation that is a better approximation of the cases we've seen every 2 weeks by taking the totals from the report 2 weeks ago and comparing to the report of the week.  For an explanation of why this is more appropriate, read over my post about it:  https://funwithmacovid-19reporting.blogspot.com/2020/10/why-weekly-community-numbers-reported.html Blue  - Less than 1.5 cases per 100,000 people per day  (this is approximately the " Low transmission " from the CDC) Green  - Greater than or equal to 1.5 and less than 4 cases per 100,000 people per day (included in " Moderate transmission " spread from the CDC) Yellow   - Greater than or equal to 4 and less than 8 cases per 100,000 people per day (included in " Moderate transmission " spread from the CDC) Orange  - Greater than or equal to 8 and less than 16 cases per 100,000 ...

Fun with MA COVID-19 Reporting 25-Aug-2021 Edition

It's Wednesday, which means we have an update on the new hospitalizations we've seen in the last week.  Not surprisingly, we've continued the steady increase we've been experiencing since late July: June 13-19 2021 -  13.4 June 20-26 2021 -  12.7 Jun 27-Jul 3 2021- 11.4 July 4-10 2021    -  14.3 July 11-17 2021  -  14.3 July 18-24 2021  -  17.9 July 25-31 2021  -  34.0 Aug 01-07 2021  -  42.7 Aug 08-14 2021  -  57.7 Aug 15-21 2021  -  68.3 Sticking with hospitals for a moment, last week saw another increase in the daily increase of hospital use.  The weeks of July 25-August 14 we were seeing about 11-12.5 more hospital beds being in use per day.  That average shifted up to 19.3 more beds being in use per day, finishing off the week with a total of 519 beds in use as of Saturday (increasing to 569 yesterday).  ICU bed usage increase has also seen an uptick with the same weeks seeing 1...

Fun with MA COVID-19 Reporting 24-Aug-2021 Edition

It's a week before September 2021.  This time in 2020, we saw 303.4 cases per day (4.4 cases per 100,000 people per day) and had about 160 people in the hospital for COVID-19, about 40 of whom were in the ICU and about 20 of whom were intubated.  We also saw 15 people dying per day. Last week we, by contrast, we saw more than 1226.9 cases per day (17.8 cases per 100,000 people per day) (and, as usual, expect that number to increase substantially over the next few days).  We've reached 575 people in the hospital, 140 of whom are in the ICU and 63 are intubated... 165 of those hospitalized were fully vaccinated when they caught COVID-19 (28%).  We only saw 4.7 people die per day, so that's something... but imagine where that number could be if we had all kept up precautions as we entered the summer. I've been saying for a couple weeks that we were in October 2020 spread levels... the last week of October saw 1165.4 cases per day (16.9 cases per 100,000 people per day)....
